Stand on the opposite footpath and look back at your own front yard. That is roughly 15 metres, and it is the only viewing distance that matters, because almost nobody stops at the property line to admire a single border.

At 15 metres one plant of anything reads as noise. Five or seven of the same plant read as a block of colour or texture, which is why front gardens that photograph well are usually built from three or four repeated species rather than twenty different ones.

The same rule governs edges. One clean line where lawn meets bed carries further than any individual flower. Get the masses and the edge right at fifteen metres first, then add fine detail only in the last two metres near the door, where people slow down enough to see it.

Municipal sight-triangle rules commonly cap planting at 30 inches within roughly 25 feet of a driveway or corner, so the hedge that solves your privacy problem can be the thing the city later asks you to cut. Above that sits the association: the Community Associations Institute counts tens of millions of Americans living under recorded covenants, and front-yard clauses routinely govern lawn removal, gravel, fence height and even permitted plant lists.
