Cold climate landscape design

Zones 3 to 5 spend about half the year with the perennials cut to the ground and snow over everything else. A render shows the other half. Here is what the cold does to a design, and what the picture leaves out.

A garden in the coldest third of the country spends roughly 6 months a year dormant, and that half is almost absent from the photographs image models learn on. The half of the year nobody photographs

The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map divides the country into 10-degree bands built from the average annual extreme minimum winter temperature, and zones 3, 4 and 5 cover roughly -40°F up to -10°F. The number that matters to a design, though, is not the low. It is the length of the dead season. In Fargo or Duluth the borders are cut to the ground by early November and nothing moves until April, and almost nobody photographs a garden in that state — so the training data behind any image model is overwhelmingly June. Ask for a redesign and you get an answer about June. What carries the rest is bark, standing seedheads, evergreen mass, a wall or fence worth looking at, and the shape of the beds under snow. Cover the flowers in the render with your thumb and judge what is left.

Snow is a load, and it is also a volume

Two problems, and a render draws neither. The load: wet snow splays multi-leader arborvitae and columnar junipers apart at the top, and they rarely close again, so anything narrow and upright near a door gets tied before the first storm. Snow sliding off a roof lands hard on whatever is planted under the eave, which is the one strip that should hold nothing you care about. The volume: every square foot cleared off a drive has to be piled somewhere, and a plough bank sits on the bed nearest the street for months, compacted and full of grit. A design that does not allocate somewhere to put a winter's snow gets one chosen for it. Look at any render and ask where the snow goes.

Frost heave moves what you build

Freeze-thaw cycling pushes things out of the ground. Dry-laid pavers rise and tip at the joints, a perennial planted late can be levered clear of the soil with its roots in the air by March, and anything vertical — a pergola post, a gate, a low wall — needs a footing below the local frost depth or it will lean within a few winters. Frost depth is a municipal figure rather than a national one, and the building department holds it. This is where a render misleads most quietly: it draws a flush, tight-jointed terrace, which is a photograph of year one in zone 4 and never of year five. Mulch late rather than early, once the ground is cold, because the job is to keep it frozen instead of letting it thaw and refreeze.

Salt is a planting decision, not a maintenance one

Wherever a plough or a shovel goes, de-icing salt goes with it. University of Minnesota Extension advises keeping trees and shrubs at least 7 feet from roadways and 3 feet from drives and walks, warns that evergreens are the worst affected because their foliage is exposed all winter, and explains that sodium makes clay particles swell, so soil compacts and roots stop getting air. A render, working from temperate suburban photographs, draws exactly the crisp evergreen ribbon along the driveway edge that this rule exists to prevent. The unglamorous fix is to hold planting back from the salted line, put the toughest and cheapest material at the front, and treat the first few feet beside the drive as ground you spend nothing on.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best landscaping for a cold climate?

Something that is still legible in February. That means evergreen mass placed where it is seen from indoors, shrubs with coloured stems or good bark, grasses and seedheads left standing until spring, and hard edges that read under snow. Flowering perennials are the easy part in zones 3 to 5; the eight months either side of them are the design problem.

Does snow damage evergreens?

Wet snow does, mechanically rather than by cold. Multi-stemmed upright conifers such as arborvitae splay apart at the leaders under load and usually stay open afterwards, and snow shed from a roof can flatten anything planted under the eave. Tying narrow uprights loosely before winter and keeping beds out from under roof edges prevents most of it.

How do you stop frost heave lifting paving?

For anything with a footing — posts, gates, walls, steps — take the footing below your local frost depth, which the building department publishes for your municipality. For dry-laid paving, the defences are a deep compacted base, free-draining aggregate and somewhere for water to go, since heave is driven by water in the ground freezing rather than by air temperature alone.
