Picking a style, choosing plants, judging scale, settling an argument with a partner, costing the work, reading a slope and handing something to a contractor are separate tasks with separate answers. The three groups here are works, half works, and does not work. Every judgement comes from how image models behave, not from a test of five yards, because Skyble Lab has not run one and will not imply otherwise.
Where it works: style direction on your own house

Style is the job renders do best, and it is not a small job. Most people cannot tell whether a Mediterranean gravel terrace suits their house until they see it against their own brick, their own roof pitch, their own fence line. A photograph of somebody else's garden does not settle that. A mood board settles it even less, because a mood board never has to survive contact with a beige 1970s bungalow.

The second thing renders do well is arbitration. Two people living in the same house often want different gardens, and the argument runs on adjectives — low maintenance, not too formal, something modern — that mean different things to each of them.
Images end that quickly because they replace adjectives with pictures. Generate the version one person wants, generate the version the other wants, and look at both on the same yard. In practice one of two things happens. Somebody sees their own idea rendered and quietly goes off it, or both people point at a third option neither had proposed.
That is worth more than it sounds. A design disagreement is cheap to settle on a screen and expensive to settle in mulch, after a contractor has been paid to lay the wrong thing. Where it works: bed and patio proportion against a real house

The third thing renders get right is proportion measured against a real building. Beds are almost always drawn too narrow by amateurs. A border that feels generous when marked out with a hose on the lawn reads as a thin ribbon once the house is in the same frame, and no plan on paper shows that.
Because a photo-to-photo tool keeps the house at the size the camera saw it, the render shows the bed at true relative scale. A four-foot border under a two-storey wall looks wrong in the image in the same way it will look wrong in the ground.
Patios behave identically. People consistently under-size a terrace, then discover a table and four chairs leave no room to push a chair back. Where it half works: plant identity and local availability

Plants are where the honest answer becomes half. A render gives a palette that reads correctly — silver mounds, upright purple spikes, tan grasses, dark evergreen balls — and that is genuinely useful for briefing a nursery.
What it does not reliably give is a shopping list. Two failure modes recur. The first is identification: a rendered shrub can look convincingly like a plant that does not exist, or like three plants blended into one. The second is availability. Even a correctly named species may not be sold in your region, in the size shown, at the time you want to plant it.
Check anything you like against the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map before buying, then check a local nursery actually stocks it. The reliable way to use a render is as a description of the look — texture, height, colour, density — rather than as a plant list. Take the image to the nursery and ask what they carry that does the same job.
Where it half works: the render is always at peak season

Renders have no idea what month it is. Almost every generation returns the garden at its best: perennials in flower, grasses full, lawn even, nothing dormant, nothing cut back. In most climates that describes perhaps six weeks of the year.
This half works because the look is real — the border genuinely does that in July. The problem is that a garden also has to be worth looking at in February, and no render shows the February version. Deciduous shrubs will be bare stems. Grasses will be tan or cut to the ground. Roughly half the bed will be visible mulch.
The correction is to read the render for structure rather than colour. Evergreens, hedges, walls, paths and paving are what remains when the flowers are gone, and all of them are visible in the image once you look for them specifically. If a render is beautiful only because of bloom, the garden it describes will be dull for three seasons out of four.
Where it half works: small spaces and the edge of the frame

Small spaces are the hardest case, and the reason is the camera rather than the model. A phone at wide angle stretches whatever sits near the edges of the frame, so a narrow side return, a courtyard or a balcony arrives already distorted: walls leaning outward, the far end further away than it really is, the path wider at the bottom than the top.
The model works from those pixels, inherits the distortion, and designs into it. The output usually looks fine and is subtly wrong about how much room exists.
Two habits reduce it. Back up and shoot from outside the space rather than standing in it, and keep whatever matters in the middle third of the frame. Anything at the edge — the corner where the fence meets the house, the last two feet of a bed — is the least trustworthy part of any render. In a space under about eight feet wide, measure with a tape as well and compare the tape against what the image implies.
Where it does not work: slopes, grading and drainage

Slope is the clearest failure of the lot. A single photograph carries weak depth information and no elevation data, so a sloped site frequently comes back rendered flat. A yard dropping three feet from the house to the back fence returns as a level lawn with a border around it — a garden that cannot be built without retaining walls, steps and drainage that appear nowhere in the image.
Grading and drainage fail for the same reason. Where water goes after a storm is a function of levels, soil type and what is buried underground, none of which is visible in a photograph of the surface.
If your site drops more than about a foot across its width, treat every render as a mood board rather than a layout. Terracing, wall heights and step runs are a design problem for a person standing on the site with a level, and they are usually the largest number on the quote.
Where it does not work: cost, plant maturity, permits

Three more jobs get a flat no. Cost is the first: no render prices anything. An image does not know whether that paving is $8 or $40 a square foot, how many cubic yards of soil the bed swallows, or what labour costs in your county. Any tool quoting a number straight from a picture is guessing, and a comparison of what each tier of landscape design software actually delivers is a better use of an afternoon than trusting one.
Maturity is the second, and it is the most common disappointment with these tools. Renders show planting three to five seasons out. What you plant is small shrubs spaced far apart in a lot of bare mulch.
Permits and setbacks are the third. Fence heights, impervious surface limits, HOA rules, utility easements and irrigation restrictions are legal facts about your parcel — the EPA WaterSense program is a reasonable starting point on water rules — and no image model reads any of them.
How to tell a good result from a bad one

Four checks separate a usable render from a merely pretty one, and all four take under a minute.
The first is the house. Compare roofline, window trim and front door position against the original photo. If any of them moved, the tool regenerated the scene rather than editing it, and the result is not your property. The second is fixed objects. A slab, a retaining wall, a mature tree, a utility cover. If they survived, the model read the site. If the mature oak vanished, the image is a fantasy of a different yard.
The third is construction detail. Look at where gravel meets lawn, at paver joint widths, at the edge of a step. Good results hold detail there; bad ones dissolve into texture.

The base rate nobody publishes: some generations are unusable

Here is the part vendors leave out. Some generations are unusable, and you regenerate. Not rarely, as an edge case — routinely, as the normal way these tools get used.
Diffusion models are stochastic. The same photo and the same style produce a different image every run, and some of those runs come back with a warped fence, a path to nowhere, a tree growing out of a wall, or planting that ignores what was asked for. That is not a defect of one particular app. It is how the technology behaves, and any vendor implying otherwise is selling.
The consequence is practical: treat the first render as a draft, not a verdict. Generate a style two or three times before judging either the style or the tool. Featureless yards make it worse — flat lawn, plain fence, no fixed reference gives the model very little to hold onto.
